Belchertown Massachusetts Photos and Trivia

Once Known as Cold Spring

Belchertown, Massachusetts

I admit I always feel a bit sorry for Belchertown. They used to have the gorgeous name of Cold Spring. Now they have a name, from the original "Belcher's Town," that sounds a bit like a burp.

Belchertown is HUGE - it's over 55 square miles. When you're driving to or from Amherst it seems like Belchertown goes on forever. It has a lovely town common.

Belchertown Trivia

Belchertown is along the western side of the man-created Quabbin Reservoir.

From 1922 to 1994 Belchertown had the Belchertown State School - a place for mentally disabled people - which received a lot of bad press for its conditions.

There's almost 13,000 people living in Belchertown.

The town is named after Jonathan Belcher, who would become the Royal Governor of Massachusetts
