- recent - | Springfield Massachusetts Photos and Trivia Also known as the Pioneer Valley Some people call this western-but-not-all-the-way-west part of Massachusetts the Pioneer Valley region - but most people I know talk about being in the Springfield area. So that's what I call this region on these pages. On the regional map, it's the area in red, just to the east of the Berkshires. So these are the towns in the Springfield area. Springfield, Massachusetts is the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Quadrangle of great museums. Friendly's Ice Cream was founded right outside of Friendlies too, and the HQ is still located there. The Springfield region is also the location of the Big E each fall - a huge agricultural fair that attracts millions through its gates. There's other things in this part of Massachusetts as well. UMass-Amherst has quite a number of museums and shops near it. As I work on my town-photo-a-day project I'll be filling in the town names below. Be sure to bookmark and come back to watch the progress! Amherst Belchertown Palmer I've also got some region-wide information below.
