Springfield Founded in 1636
Springfield was founded only a few years after the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Originally called Agawam in 1636 when it was first founded, its name was changed to Springfield in 1640. The founder, William Pynchon, wrote a book which was banned and burned in 1650 and soon thereafter returned to England.
